In this post we'll start by looking at Skipton's buses, then move on to visit a few pubs. One of the most famous stage carriage operators was Pennine of Gargrave, with services reaching as far as Lancaster. Sadly, the compnany recently ceased operations.
Pennine took over Ezra Laycock of Barnoldswick, with a service into Skipton.
Many of the large operators serve Skipton. Firstbus came in from Leeds, though no longer.
Transdev, in its various guises, features greatly in the Skipton bus scene.
Many Transdev services from Lancashire were inherited from Ribble.
A recent development means that Rotala owned Preston Buses now serve Skipton, but the service has now been taken over by Stagecoach. (Thanks to Stevie D for the updates).
With the demise of Pennine, North Yorkshire Council now operates some loss making services with a fleet of minibuses.
A selection of other independent bus companies have served Skipton including Skipton Busways.....
......Tyrer from Lancashire,......
.......Pride of The Dales,......
......ABC Travel, based in Merseyside,....
.....Castle Coaches (they didn't last long),.....
......and finally, Kirkby Lonsdale Coaches, who now run northwards from here.
Turning to the town's hostelries, we'll start at the Albion, a pleasant Tetley house.
Another former Tetley pub, the Rose & Crown.
The Red Lion is situated in the heart of town.
The Royal Shepherd, seen in Whitbread's hands.
On the edge of the town centre, the Commercial.
There'a a Timothy Taylor's pub right in the town centre, the Woolly Sheep.
A popular free house, down a pedestrianised road, the Narrow Boat.
There's a couple of micropubs in Skipton now, First to arrive was the Beer Engine.
Another good micropub, the Early Doors.
We conclude at a newish venture, the Sound Bar, a combination of records and beer. What more do you want?!
It's now time to head out of Skipton, but to where? Find out in the next post.
You're a little bit out of date!
ReplyDeleteFirst suspended their services to Skipton at the start of Covid (they cut the X84 back to just run between Leeds and Ilkley), with Ilkley to Skipton now served by Transdev.
And Rotala/Preston Bus stopped serving Skipton in summer 2019, when the 280 was transferred to Stagecoach.
