WE ENTER THE TAYSIDE REGION

It's time to leave Stonehaven behind, with just a glimpse backwards.

Now we're approaching Dunnottar Castle.

It's an impressive place! More info here.

Within the walls.

The view out to sea from the castle.

We now head south along the coast and reach Kinnaber Junction, where the two routes of the Great Race to The North once came together. This is the last diagram from the signal box, after it ceased to be a junction.

A couple of miles further south is the town of Montrose. (Phillip N Young - Creative Commons License).

A down HST, led by car 43061, arrives at Montrose in 1990. It has just crossed the viaduct of the River South Esk.

Down by the harbour is the Bamse statue, dedicated to a Norwegian St Bernard dog. Read more here. (Creative Commons License).

Strathtay, having taken over Northern Scottish in the area, had a depot in Montrose.

Two more Strathtay vehicles, Montrose town centre, September 1998. The Metrorider had been transferred from parent company, Yorkshire Traction.

A couple of small independents served Montrose; Merlin's Ark and Robb's of Brechin.

Here's the old Robert Deuchar's Brewery in Montrose, now the Lochside Distillery.

Beer and whisky can be found in the Market Arms.

A couple of miles inland is Bridge of Dun station, eastern terminus of the preserved Caledonian Railway

At the other end of the line, the society's HQ, Brechin station, seen in 1974 (Ben Brooksbank).

Steam and diesel locos operate the service.

The nearby Dalhousie Bar was once worth a visit, but does not appear to have survived the pandemic of 2020.

Back in 1976, I once found this old Albion coach festering away in a yard just outside Brechin.

We now divert well inland, this map will explain all, to remote Glenclova.

Back in civilisation, we reach Kirriemuir, where we find this Leyland Tiger of McLennan's of Spittalfield.

A further exploration of the area will be made in the next post.

TWIXT TWO PUBS (BUT THE LAST ONE IS CLOSED!)

Having finished with the Wakefield area, we head in a northeasterly direction to Wrenthorpe, where find the Malt Shovel. The pub is still ...
