THE ROAD TO WIGAN PIER (AND A BIT BEYOND)

Another pub to the north of Wigan, in the suburbs, is a Wetherspoons hotel, the Brocket Arms.

Not far away is the Bird in the Hand, seen in 1990.

Here's George Orwell's Wigan Pier, as depicted on a postcard......

.....and here's a photo of mine from 1992.

Boat tours along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal can be taken here.

Nearby is the famous Trencherfield Mill, now a tourist attraction (Creative Commons License).

The larger of Wigan's railway stations is called North Western, on the electrified West Coast Main Line. Here's a decent selection of the traffic over the years.

Directly below Wigan North Western station is a fine boozer, in the arches. It's called Wigan Central.

Opposite the main entrance to the station is the Swan & Railway, another pub that is not to be missed.

That's where I'll end this post. Next time, we'll look at central Wigan.
