IN WHICH WE SEE THE CANAL BASIN, NUNNERY, VICTORIA STATION AND T'WICKER (BUT NO OPEN PUBS)

Just a short tour of the northern edges of Sheffield city centre (the map here will give you an idea of where we are), starting at the canal basin and terminus of the Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation, seen here around 1910.

By 1992 it was all a bit derelict.

The area was refurbished in the early 21st century and here are a few views from 2006, with the straddle warehouse back to its full glory.

Hidden beneath is Nunnery Main Line Junction, still in use today, though the signal box has gone. A spur from here climbs up from the Midland line to the Great Central.

There was a LNWR loco shed close by, closed just after the Grouping of 1923.

Nunnery Colliery was also in this area. Hunslet no. 2 (786-1902) is seen here.

The Sheffield Supertram cars are based at nearby Nunnery depot (Foulger Rail Photos CC).

Jumping across the River Don, we arrive at the Norfolk Arms in Carlisle Street, a Tetley house (formerly Gilmour's), long closed now.

The Norfolk Arms would once have served the workers from Wicker Goods station, the original terminus of the Sheffield & Rotherham Railway. All gone now.

Next, up on a viaduct/embankment was Sheffield Victoria station. Here's the interior when it had an overall roof.

Here are a couple of GCR locos.

Both the LNER and LMS served Victoria station, the latter using running powers from Penistone.

In BR days, electric locos were a common sight here, plus the odd diesel hauled freight working.

There were signal boxes at either end of Victoria station.

The derelict station in 1979 and de-electrified in 1984.

At the north end of the station the railway crosses The Wicker by this famous arch.

The Wicker was once home to a good number of pubs, but they've all gone now, including the Viaduct, seen behind SYT's towbus attending a dead Ailsa in 1986.
