POND STREET (PART 2)

We remain at Sheffield's main bus terminal and now have a look at some of the other operators using it. Potteries Motor Traction was one of them, on a long distance route from Staffordshire.

Trent Motor Traction provided a regular service, inherited from North Western Road Car.

Trent is now part of the Wellglade Group, who operate around Sheffield using the name TM Travel.

Here are a few visitors, including Silver Service from Darley Dale (Derbyshire), United and Hants & Dorset.

Prior to deregulation, few independents served Sheffield. Wigmores was one of the exceptions.

Dearneways introduced an express service towatds Thurnscoe.

In 1986, Whyte's of Calver were operating a service to Buxton.

New post deregulation operators included Groves, Powells and Richardsons.

Northern Bus rose from the old Wigmore fleet and fell into the clutches of Mainline.

Another large operator was SUT.

West Riding, under the name "Sheffield & District", began services in the city, for a short time.

Andrews, Sheafline, Sheffield Omnibus and Yorkshire Terrier all got absorbed by the Yorkshire Traction Group.

Until its recent demise, Hulley's ran several services into Derbyshire (Lower photo by Andrew Fieldsend).

Sheffield Community Transport ran out to Penistone for a while.

And there you have it, a potted photographic history of Pond Street Bus Station/Sheffield Interchange. Now it's time for a long awaited pint, at the historic Old Queens Head, right alongside the Interchange.

In the next post, we'll move into the city centre.

POND STREET (PART 1)

Sheffield's main bus terminus sits alongside Pond Street, between Midland station and the city centre. It's now called Sheffield Interchange, but let's go back in time, when we see a row of Sheffield City Transport buses lined up there.

The LNER also ran into Pond Street, with longer distance services. These were later amalgamated into the municipal fleet.

Buses from Sheffield and Doncaster seen here in the 1950s.

An old Leyland saloon given an extended life as a service vehicle.

A couple of photos taken just before the PTE took over.

South Yorkshire PTE took over the municipal operators of the county. This included this ex Sheffield AEC saloon.

SYPTE later bought Dennis Dominators, this one bodied by East Lancs.

A vehicle shortage saw the PTE bring in hired vehicles, including this United Bristol RE.

1980 saw the operation of the "Kneeling National" and the first of the "Bendybuses".

Later, the fleetname "Mainline" was introduced.

Some of the more unusual vehicles in the fleet.

Mainline later became part of Firstbus.

Chesterfield Transport was another municipal operator serving Sheffield.

Halifax also ran into Pond Street bus station.

Later, West Yorkshire PTE (later renamed Yorkshire Rider) buses came into here.

Another major operator was East Midland Motor Services.

East Midland was sold to the Stagecoach Group.

Yorkshire Traction came into Sheffield from the Barnsley area.

For a short period, some "Tracky" buses received green Mexboriugh & Swinton livery.

Like East Midland, Yorkshire Traction became part of Stagecoach.

Wow! That's an awful lot of buses. We'll see more in part 2 and I promise you a pint then.
