On our way from Brentwood, we pass through Harold Wood station, now within Greater London. A Great Eastern Railway 4-4-0 speeds through.
Harold Wood station was once just a two platform affair, with a nice GER signal box. It's all changed since.
Next along the lne is Gidea Park, until recently the terminus of the inner subrban service, which is now extended to Shenfield. Two photos here in GER days.
About a mile away, on the LT&SR Upminster to Romford line, is Emerson Park Halt. It hasn't changed much over the years.
LTSR tender loco No. 60 passes through on a freight.
A DMU calls at Emerson Park around 1971. The shuttle service is now operated by electric units.
Just to the south of Emerson Park Halt is Hornchurch town centre. Blue Line of Upminster used to operate here, with permission from London Transport.
The service was later taken over by Super Coaches, though this old Bristol LS was still in the livery of Green Bus of Rugeley.
Of course, London Transport was the main operator in Hornchurch. LS131 was photographed here in 1979.
On the same occasion, a visit was paid to Hornchurch Garage.
Essex operator, Ensignbus, could also be found in Hornchurch.
To the south of Hornchurch town centre is its railway station, once served by LT&SR trains, though now by London Underground's District Line.
Back into central Hornchurch and there are a couple of old Ind Coope pubs to visit, no doubt serving beers from the nearby Romford Brewery. The Bull was photographed around 1910.
Now here's the White Hart, sometime in the '30s.
A more modern offering is the town's Wetherspoons, JJ Moons.
That's it for now. In the next post, we may well visit Romford.
