UP.....TO UPMINSTER

I left you shopping in Lakeside yesterday, so now we're moving on. To get to the bus station from inside the centre, I once had to negotiate the lingerie department of one of the department stores there, fortunately without any 'Father Ted' incidents.

Harris of Grays was once a big operator here. They had some ex Northampton Bristol VRs.

Ensign is now the major bus company serving Lakeside.

Our next stop is Ockendon, on the single track railway from Grays to Upminster. The signal box here, long gone now, controlled the passing loop.

Unit 253 calls at Ockendon around 1971.

We now leave the railway behind and enter Greater London at North Ockendon, where Ensign was providing the bus service in 1990.

Our next stop is the village of Cranham and we're here for one reason only, to visit the yard of Lewington's Coaches, with an eclectic collection of vehicles.

What a fine selection!

So, on to Upminster and it's time for a pint. The Crumpled Horn, seen in 2003, when it was a good free house will do just fine.

Next, a look at Upminster's transport.
