Just to the south west of Welwyn is Ayot Green and, fortunately, there's a pub there, next to the motorway but hidden from it.
About three miles to the west is Wheathampstead, a large Hertfordshire village. Its centre is around the church, crossroads and the bridge (seen here).
Here's a more modern view of the village centre. (Creative Commons License)
St. Helen's Church.
Wheathampstead was once served by the Great Northern Railway, on its route from Hatfield to Dunstable.
The station site has been partly restored and they've done a good job.
Public transport is today provided by buses. Centrebus run the service to Welwyn Garden City.
The Nelson was a short walk away from the village centre. The latest reports are that it is an Italian restaurant and no longer a pub.
In the middle of Wheathampstead is the Swan, a busy place.
The Bull used to be ok, but, according to whatpub, is no longer a proper pub, just a restaurant and you can't go in there just for a pint. It has no real ale anyway.
Two boozers gone, but a new one has arrived, a micropub called The Reading Rooms. It serves mainly Farr Brew beers, made locally.
A mile or so to the north is Gustard Wood, where there's good beer and they do B&B, so....
.....it's a good place to rest for a while.
