UNDER THE MAST

From Bretton Park, it's just a couple of miles across country to Clayton West, where an ex L&YR branch from Shepley & Shelley terminated. We start this post with a bit of a bang!

The branch survived until 1983, with an infrequent DMU service from Huddersfield. It's seen here in 1979.

The station was derelict by 1989.

Ten years later and the 15" gauge Kirklees Light Railway has taken over.

'Badger' is seen on the turntable.

No. 24 sits outside the shed.

Diesel loco 'Jay' waits to shunt a single carriage.

There was also a raised circular miniature railway for 'big kids' to ride on.

Pride of the fleet, 'Hawk', waits to depart.

Westwards along the line, at Skelmanthorpe, there was serious industry, in the form of coke ovens.

Skelmanthorpe's station, in L&YR days.

The Kirklees Light Railway once terminated at Skelmanthorpe. 'Badger' has just arrived.

About a mile to the north of Skelmanthorpe is the TV mast at Emley Moor, which can be seen from many parts of the county.

At nearby Roydhouse, there's a decent pub.

The Kirklees Light Railway, now renamed 'Whistlestop Valley', has been extended to Shelley, where 'Hawk' is about to be turned.

Here's Shepley & Shelley station on the L&YR Penistone - Huddersfield line.

The next station towards Huddersfield is Stocksmoor.

Stocksmoor has a pretty decent free house, the Clothiers Arms.

Soon we arrive at Brockholes station, junction for the Holmfirth branch.

Indeed, Holmfirth is our next destination, but you'll have to wait for the next post.
