BRIEFLY, BACK TO YORKSHIRE

We're leaving Lancashire behind, for a while anyway, and head over Todmorden Moor for about four miles to Gauxholme, where the Bacup Road meets the Hebden Bridge to Rochdale main road, railway and the canal. Here we find the Masons Arms, though I'm told it's "long-term closed". It used to sell Copper Dragon beers.

Nearby is the Woodpecker, a rare (in Yorkshire) Lees' pub.

Barearts Brewery was also here.

The railway and the Rochdale Canal share the valley at Gauxholme.

The railway crosses over by this impressive bridge, beside Gauxholme Lower Lock.

We now follow the "Great Wall of Tod" into Todmorden itself.

Lock 19 on the Rochdale Canal in Todmorden.

Here's Todmorden railway station in L&YR times.

By 1987, the station had been reduced to just two platforms.

Northern Rail now serves Todmorden.

Todmorden Corporation used to have its own buses. Here's the fleet in the depot yard. Services started in 1907.

In 1909, there was a little problem.

The railway took an interest in Todmorden's buses, to form Todmorden Joint Omnibus Committee. This preserved Leyland is seen in its old depot in 1987.

Todmorden later joined Halifax to form Calderdale JOC, which succumbed to the might of West Yorkshire PTE. At Todmorden depot we see the Leyland Leopard/Seddon bus, number 3333, at Todmorden depot in 1980.

A fine AEC Matador was found here too.

Still in its Calderdale colours, WYPTE 3337 was photographed at Todmorden bus station.

An unusual Hebble coach was found here in 1975, I think.

A couple of vanished independents once seen in Todmorden; Universal Buses from the Rochdale area and Northern Blue from Burley.

Firstbus run most of the services today.

TLC Travel also serves the town.

We'll continue our look at Todmorden, then head back into Lancashire in the next post.

TWIXT TWO PUBS (BUT THE LAST ONE IS CLOSED!)

Having finished with the Wakefield area, we head in a northeasterly direction to Wrenthorpe, where find the Malt Shovel. The pub is still ...
