INTO SCOTLAND

We haven't quite done with Carlisle yet, as we enter the city's northern environs. Our first stop is at the power station, alongside the WCML. Two fireless locos were found here, out of use, in 1977.

More steam now, at Kingmoor loco shed in the 1960s.

Ribble provided transport to Kingmoor for visiting enthusiasts.

And so we enter Scotland and, like many others before us, we find ouselves in Gretna Green. First stop, the railway station, with a Glasgow & South Western Railway train..

The station has recently reopened. (Creative Commons License from Wikipedia).

Apparently, Gretna Green is a good place to get married! (Creative Commons License).

There's also a church (Photo by Alan Feebery, Creative Commons).

Next stop, the small town of Annan, where the railway station had proper signalling in 1967.

There's a decent boozer in Annan, the Blue Bell.

We now head almost due west to the village of New Abbey, home of Sweetheart Abbey itself.

Here's a couple of photos from my slide collection, restored from badly faded commercial transparencies. I'll gladly remove these pictures if there's any copyright issues.

We're not far from Dumfries and we'll visit there in the next post. Meanwhile, follow the route here.
