It's time to leave Gourock behind and a ferry is calling. We're not, at the moment anyway, catching the Cal-Mac ferry to Dunoon.
We're taking the much smaller ferry known as the 'Seabus'.
This is where we are heading, the village of Kilcreggan, on the north bank of the Clyde.
The 'Seabus' arrives at Kilcreggan.
Looking upstream at Kilcreggan.
While we're in Kicreggan, we might as well have a pint..... inside the fine Kilcreggan Hotel.
Now we must head in this direction, around to the north.
It's only a couple of miles to Cove Bay.
The small village of Cove is served by Wilson's Buses of Rhu.
There are fine views of the lower stretches of Loch Long from the Knockderry Hotel.
We now must cross Loch Long and the mouth of Holy Loch to Dunoon, where the ferry from Gourock is arriving.
It's important to point out that the town of Dunoon is on the Scottish mainland, but is best reached by ferry. It's a really long journey by road from Glasgow! Buses in Dunoon were once run by Kelvin Central and Western SMT.
Baird of Dunoon also had a local route, running to Sandbank.
Baird was also associated with Cowal Motor Services.
Arran Coaches ran a service in Dunoon for a short while, in the days following deregulation.
We must now recross the Clyde and soon arrive at Wemyss Bay, at the end of the railway from Glasgow, The station is magnificent!
The platforms in 1979.
318254 forms a local service in 2004.
Wemyss Bay is also served by buses between Gourock and Largs.
Another ferry will take us across the Clyde again to our first Scottish island, Bute. Here we find Port Bannantyne.
We could rest awhile in the Port Royal Hotel. Oh dear, I'm now told it's shut for ever! A great shame as it was a nice place.
The next post will see us visiting the mainland and more islands. Follow our route here.
