'ARROGATE

Very few people in Yorkshire pronouce their "aitches", unless one comes from Harrogate, a very upmarket spa town. The waters can be taken in the Royal Pump Room.

The Valley Gardens are the place to be seen in.

Here's the Kursaal, now known as the Royal Hall.

The monument, close to the bus and railway stations.

Here's an earlier view, with an old bus.

The West Yorkshire Road Car Company (WYRCC) was the main operator.

No. 136 outside Harrogate depot.

An old WYRCC vehicle at Station Square.

Here's a Leyland National of WYRCC, number 1412.

Samuel Ledgard had one route into Harrogate.

Harrogate Independent Travel sprang into action after deregulation.

Connexxions is the largest independent in town.

Connexxions painted this Scania into the old WYRCC livery.

WYRCC survived into post NBC days. A Leyland Lynx sits in the bus station.

Transdev is now the main operator and has modern vehicles on the 36 to Leeds and Ripon.

Electric buses are used on some local routes.

Adjacent to the bus terminus is the railway station, once served mainly by "Pacers".

This LNER built signal box is in charge.

Northern now run most services.

One of the redundant station buildings has been converted to become the Harrogate Tap.

The New Inn was once a Tetley pub, but brewing its own beer.

The Montpelier is a long, narrow pub.

The Tap & Spile, since renamed as The Tap on Tower Street.

The Winter Gardens, quite an upmarket Wetherspoons.

The Old Bell, owned by Market Town Taverns.

Not to be missed, the gaslit Hales Bar.

The Blues Bar is well worth a visit.

Harrogate's first micropub, the Little Ale House.

A newcomer is North Bar, related to the one in Leeds.

Our final stop is Starling Independent Beer and Coffee House.

In the next post, we'll see a lot more of North Yorkshire.
