IN MR CUMMINGS' FOOTSTEPS TO BARNARD CASTLE

Our last stop in North Yorkshire, at least for now, is the village of Ravensworth, where we find the Bay Horse. Ive just found out that it is "permanently closed".

So, we head on into County Durham, to the town of Barnard Castle. Here is the railway station in LNER times. It has, sadly, since closed.

The west side of the castle and the bridge over the River Tees.

A better view of the castle.

Durham District, a subsidiary of United, used to run the buses (Photo from my collection, photographer unknown).

United continued into the late 20th Century.

This CVE Omni was operated by Weardale Motor Services.

Maude's Coaches had their depot in Barnard Castle.

The Turk's Head, another one that's gone.

Thankfully, the Coach & Horses still exists.

The Golden Lion is still pulling pints as well.

Following the Tees upstream, we reach the NER station at Lartington.

The North Eastern Railway also served Romaldkirk.

There's a nice church at Romaldkirk.

Onwards now, to Middleton-in-Teesdale and its railway station, all history now.

I'm assuming that the Talbot Hotel in Middleton-in-Teesdale has closed, as I can find no mention of it on the internet.

The Forresters is still in business. The Kings Head, next door, has gone.

Still following the Tees, we arrive at a tourist spot, High Force.

Nearby is the village of Forest-in-Teesdale, with its tiny church, dedicated to St James the Less. (Photo by Pip - Creative Commons License).

There's also the High Force Hotel, which used to have a brewery in the yard.

The brewery has gone, but the pub has a unique beer called "Is This The Way To Barnard Castle?"!!! We'll venture into a bit of Cumbria in the next post.

Follow our route here.
