FOLLOW THAT ARM!

We now leave Berkhamsted behind and follow the Grand Union Canal to Northchurch Lock.

It's 1984 and the West Coast Main Line is alongside, as two trains pass by, near Northchurch (and its tunnel).

Leaving the railway and canal behind, we veer across country to the Hertfordshire village of Aldbury. Red Rose buses provided the service here in 2004.

The pub in the middle of Aldbury is called the Valiant Trooper.

Not far away, close to Tring station, is the Greyhound, a fine ex Allied Breweries house.

From the Greyhound it's a short walk to the former LNWR railway station. However, it's a good long walk into Tring itself.

We do, nevertheless, make that long trek. Taxis and occasional buses are available. In town we find the High Street.

London Country had a garage in Tring.

There's the remains of an old brewery in Tring.

There is also a new Tring Brewery and it's on my list to do, as are several pubs. But it's before opening time, so we must move on, passing Tring Flour Mills, where grain is being unloaded, circa 1935.
The mills shown above are actually on the Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal, which we will now follow into Buckinghamshire. When we reach Wendover itself, the canal has shrunk into just a feeder channel.

Wendover has a railway station, on the Marylebone to Aylesbury line.

It's been a bit of a "dry" post so far, but fear not, there are plenty of pubs in Wendover. First up is the White Swan.

The Red Lion is a fine Fuller's house.

The King & Queen is next on our itinery.

The Shoulder of Mutton is another "must do" on our tour.

Ye Gods! Is that the tme? Better get a move on as there's two pubs to do.

First the Pack Horse.

Last, but not least, more Fuller's at the George & Dragon.

Find out where we go afterwards - in the next post.
