HEADING NORTH-WEST (FOR NOW)

Three posts in one day! Don't expect this all the time, but I'm just getting used to doing and editing this blog with all its quirks. We've left Tilbury behind and are now a couple of miles to the north-west, at the workaday town of Grays. Tourists are not normally seen here, though it's on the Thames and not far from Lakeside Shopping Centre. Here is the High Street sometime around 1910.

The town used to have a busy market.

If you are into buses, Grays has long been an interesting place. London Country based its very few Bristol VR double-deckers there.

Nowadays, the main operator is Ensignbus.

Imperial has been and gone, as have several other operators. The photo below was taken in 2004.

Grays Athletic Football Club. It used to have a great bar with lots of real ales.

Over the years there have been some great pubs in Grays. The Bricklayers Arms was a fine Charrington's house, seen in 1991.

Down by the river was an Ind Coope house called the Wharf. I think it may have gone by now,

Tomorrow, there'll be more pubs, then we're off on a train.
