MORE ON GRANTHAM

Grantham and Newark have long been competitors for the tallest church steeple competition, but the former is the clear winner. JMW Turner painted this view of Grantham's fine church.

The other building dominating the skyline is the town hall.

Lincolnshire Road Car was the main bus operator.

Stagecoach took over Road Car, but, after an industrial dispute, the Grantham operations were sold to Mass.

However, Stagecoach continued to serve the town, with Service 1 from Lincoln.

The main operator in Grantham today is Centrebus.

Midland Red also ran into Grantham in the 1970s.

Other independents included Reliance and Pulfrey's, both from Great Gonerby.

Kimes of Folkingham and Gem Coaches of Colsterworth were once frequent visitors too.

Yet another operator, Marshalls from Nottinghamshire.

Here's an old engraving of the Market Place, with the town's top hotel, the Angel & Royal, in the background.
Now for a modern view of the
Angel & Royal.

Close by, just off the Market Place, a fine free house, the Chequers.

The Blue Pig, once a Whitbread house, is usually worth a visit.

The Hogshead, Market Place, has been and gone!

Another "chain pub", on the main drag, the Goose at the Bank.

A bit of a walk out of town, we find the superb Lord Harrowby.

Back in town , on Watergate, a new addition, Beerheadz. Well worth a visit.

Our last pub of the post, the Nobody Inn. Try and find the gent's toilet!

That leaves us in a great position to leave town, but you'll have to wait for the next post.
